Automation PitfallsDriveway Sensor PitfallsLoops: The one disadvantage of the loop is that if you have an already existing paved or concrete driveway it requires a small saw cut in the surface to install. It is best to install this before the driveway is paved or concreted. However this is one of the most reliable sensors available. Photo Beams: The photo beam sticks out of the ground and if not put in the proper place can be a tripping hazard. If photo beams are installed improperly they can be knocked out of alignment and are more susceptible to not work correctly in severe weather conditions. Probes: Probes are not designed to be used as a safety device. Keypad PitfallsThere are three things that you should keep in mind about keypads. First, some Keypads store information on a memory card or chip and if that card looses power it forgets all of the stored information. This would cause the keypad to have to be re-programmed with all of the names and numbers of residents. There is software that can make this process easier by dialing the keypads modem and uploading the information. Second, individuals forget their code, loose their access cards, etc. For an apartment or gated community it is going to require that you have a plan for replacing lost cards or allowing people to enter through the gate. Third, there is the possibility of vehicles running over the dial pads. This can be adverted by using ballard posts, reflective tape, or reflectors to provide better visibility. Operator PitfallsTwo Major pitfalls of operators are cost of maintenance and reliability. This is the part that you want to make sure you get right. There are many different manufactures to choose from and you get what you pay for. Moving parts can break and the cost of maintenance could be expensive in the long run. We suggest paying for quality up front! Also, there are several hazards if the operator is not properly guarded. Moving components could pinch or cut off a finger, so make sure the operator system is equipped with safe guards. Control Center PitfallsIn the area of installation, the lack of experience and knowledge of manufactured components, how they can and cannot work together, and the proper method of integrating them into a system may not create a UL-325 compliant system.
